Bra: French women are increasingly seduced by the "no bra"

Free our breasts. No more breasts stuck in padded and underwired bras that you can't wait to leave once the day is over. Make way for more naturalness and freedom. It seems that the "no bra" trend which consists of wearing less or even more at all bras has gained momentum following the confinement. In any case, this is revealed by a survey carried out by Ifop's "Gender, sexuality and non-sexuality" center among 3,018 French people aged 18 and over.

18% of women under 25 have stopped wearing a bra

With a return to almost normal, 18% of women surveyed under 25 say they no longer wear a bra. A percentage four times higher after the confinement period since only 4% were followers of “no bra”. This trend does not only concern young people: the total of women is 7%. And if overall, 44% have already gone out at least once without underwear, it is more difficult not to put them on at work (14%).

Among the reasons for being tempted mentioned in the survey, it turns out that comfort comes first for 53% of women. "Except among young people who are much more numerous (32%) than the average (15%) to explain that their choice is determined by "the desire to fight against the sexualization of female breasts which requires them to be hidden from view by others "".

The "no bra" not accepted by all, the breasts are still too sexualized

Unfortunately, this release of the breasts is not yet due. Indeed, the chest remains strongly an object of hyper-sexualized desire. "The analysis of the representations associated by the French with the practice of "no bra" reveals the anchoring of the "culture of rape" and the injunctions to "modesty" weighing on the female breasts". For 20% of those surveyed "the fact that a woman lets her nipples appear under a top should be, for her attacker, a mitigating circumstance in the event of sexual assault".

The survey highlights that getting rid of the bra is hindered by "the fear of being the object of physical or sexual assault", according to 57% of young women. 55% said their breasts had been the subject of "lustful looks" and around 40% had received embarrassing or sexist remarks. Worse, they are 25% to declare having been touched without their consent. There is still a long way to go for real free boobs.
