Most people "is" or "are"? : Don't make the mistake anymore!

"Most teachers have long studies" or "most teachers have long studies"? The error is subtle but very damaging when it is revealed to the eyes of your interlocutor. How to avoid the fault that is hidden in our example? What rule should be remembered? Le Figaro returns to the proper use of the phrase.

Two very simple rules will suffice to put an end to our hesitations. First of all, let's remember that the verb will always agree in gender and number with the complement of the phrase "most". So, to be correct, we will write “most people are interesting”. The auxiliary being is here conjugated in mirror of its subject "people", therefore in the plural. In the same way, we will note "most of the time is devoted to work", the verb to be here being in the singular since it is related to a subject itself in the singular.
