In Fez, epicenter of this heat peak, the inhabitants speak of a stifling heat that has hit their city since Saturday. It is unbearable especially for the poorest, who have no air conditioners or who are forced to go to work outside.

“This morning it is very very hot, it is the first time for a long time that the temperature has reached 47 ° C.For children, animals, old people, it's catastrophic. For the rich, no problems, they have air conditioners and stay at home, but the poor have to get the food. For example my father is 60 years old and works in a field outside. It's very hard for him because even the birds hide outside, ”explains Mohamed, a receptionist in a hotel in Fez.

For the head of the National Meteorological Research Center of Morocco, Hassan Haddouch, this phenomenon is first of all the consequence of global warming which has touched our planet, for years, and which is due in particular to human activity.

Le Maroc confronté à une vague de chaleur avoisinant les 51 degrés

"We have indeed noticed a massive temperature increase since yesterday [Saturday July 10] and for today, the same thing is planned. We broke temperature records in a lot of cities. It is due to human activity that gives off greenhouse gases that we have a blockage in the atmosphere. Therefore, this human activity which exudes greenhouse gases has deregulated this balance which is at the level of the atmosphere and therefore, instead of having usually, at the level of Morocco, of the atmospheric phenomena which come from the west , we have lifts that come from the east. Therefore, this time it is hot air that goes up from the Sahara and causes very significant temperature increases. We hope that temperatures, at Morocco level, will start to fall from Monday or Tuesday. Maybe he will cry and we will have seasonal temperatures again. »»
